Aero stuck on "System Recovery" with certain TVs
If your Aero gets stuck on a “System Recovery” screen and never finishes starting up, it’s almost always down to the way certain TVs set up their HDMI connection, which older Aero software couldn’t handle during start-up. We’ve seen this on specific models of TV from Philips, Panasonic and JVC.
Your Aero isn’t faulty and doesn’t need replacing. We’ve fixed this in the latest Aero software, and updating to it resolves it for good.
If you have a JVC TV
JVC TVs need a slightly different version of the fix, which we send to your Aero for you. So if you have a JVC TV and your Aero is showing these symptoms, please get in touch rather than working through the steps below. We’ll guide you through connecting the Aero to another TV or monitor briefly so we can push the update across, after which it’ll work on your JVC.
Any other TV
The box has to start up once before it can download the update, so the two steps below are about getting it past that screen so it can update itself.
Step 1: Get the Aero to start up
There are two ways to do this, and either works.
Use a different TV or monitor. If you have another TV or a monitor to hand, connect the Aero to that and switch it on. If it starts up normally, leave it there and run the update in Step 2 before moving it back.
Or change a setting on your TV. On the TV that’s giving you trouble, change the setting for the HDMI input the Aero is plugged into. Menu names vary by model, but in most cases it’s one of these:
- Philips: set HDMI Ultra HD to Standard for that input, usually under Settings → General Settings → HDMI Ultra HD → [the HDMI port the Aero is on].
- Panasonic: turn Dolby Vision off for that input, in the picture settings (often under an HDR or “HDR Dynamic Setting” menu). The Aero uses HDR10+ rather than Dolby Vision, so you won’t lose HDR picture quality by doing this.
Then unplug the Aero from the mains for 30 seconds and plug it back in. It should now start up and finish setting itself up.
Step 2: Update the Aero
Once the Aero has started up, install the latest software:
Settings → System → Software Updates → Check for Updates
Let it finish and restart. This update contains the permanent fix, so afterwards the Aero will start up normally, and if you changed a setting on your TV in Step 1 you can put it back as it was.
Still stuck?
If none of this helps, or you’re not sure which setting to change on your TV, get in touch and we’ll work through it with you. It helps if you can tell us the make and model of your TV.
