Freeview FAQs

Do I need an aerial for Freeview?

Yes, for live TV. The aerial receives the broadcast signal from UK transmitters. Most homes already have one. You only need broadband if you want catch-up apps and Freeview Play features.

Do I need broadband for Freeview?

Not for live channels. Those come through your aerial. Broadband is only required for on-demand apps like iPlayer, and for Freeview Play’s backwards-scrolling TV guide. Minimum speed: 2Mbps.

How many HD channels does Freeview have?

Nine HD channels nationwide: BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD, CBBC HD, and CBeebies HD. Some areas receive additional HD channels via commercial multiplexes.

What is Freeview Play?

Freeview Play combines live TV via aerial with catch-up and on-demand content via broadband. You can scroll back through the TV guide to find programmes from the past seven days, and access over 60,000 hours of content through integrated apps. It’s accessible via Channel 100 on compatible devices.

Can I record programmes on Freeview?

Yes — with a Freeview recorder like the Manhattan T4‑R. You can record two programmes simultaneously while watching a third. Recordings are stored on the internal hard drive and organised by genre and series.

Is Freeview being switched off?

No. The UK government has renewed DTT multiplex licences until 2034, specifically to provide stability for Freeview. Eighteen million homes rely on it — any future changes would come with years of notice.

Freeview vs Freesat — which is better?

Neither is universally better. Freeview uses your aerial and works in most homes without any installation. Freesat uses a satellite dish and offers 36 HD channels versus Freeview’s nine, plus more consistent reception. Choose Freeview if you have good aerial coverage and want simpler setup. Choose Freesat if HD matters more, or if you already have a dish. We make products for both — see our Freesat range.

Freeview vs Freely — what's the difference?

Freeview is broadcast via aerial; Freely is streamed via broadband. Freeview offers 70 – 100+ channels with recording capability. Freely offers 60+ channels (35+ in HD) with no recording — you rely on catch-up instead. Freeview works without internet; Freely requires it. Different platforms for different needs. We make products for both — see our Freely range.

Why is my Freeview reception patchy?

A few common causes: aerial condition or alignment, distance from transmitter, terrain obstacles (hills, buildings), or interference from mobile signals. Start by checking Freeview’s coverage checker at freeview.co.uk for your address. If you should be receiving channels but aren’t, try retuning your box. Persistent issues usually point to aerial problems — a local installer can diagnose.
